  17. <p>     Veteran political reporter Lou Cannon has earned glowing
  18. reviews for President Reagan: The Role of a Lifetime, a 948-page
  19. opus that charts its subject's political journey from
  20. Sacramento to Washington. So why haven't you heard more about
  21. it? That's simple: the book was released barely a week before
  22. Kitty Kelley's hit-and-run job on Nancy Reagan. Cannon is upset
  23. that Simon & Schuster, publisher of both biographies, didn't
  24. live up to a verbal agreement to keep the release of the Kelley
  25. book separate from his own tome. After numerous leaks about the
  26. Kelley book's contents, the company moved up its publication
  27. date from May to early April without informing Cannon, he
  28. claims. Although President Reagan has landed on some best-seller
  29. lists, Cannon has hired a lawyer to explore possible legal
  30. action. That move may prompt the publisher to promote the book
  31. more aggressively.
